George Lucas, 1971

In a society of the future, human beings are kept to a strict routine, with great emotional control and lack of individualism, thanks to the obligatory use of drugs. THX 1138 (Robert Duvall) works at a factory producing android police officers and deals with radioactive material. The accuracy of his movements begins to fail when his cocktail of sedatives is changed without his knowing. This is the fault of his roommate LUH 3417 (Maggie McOmie) who realises that, without sedatives, they both begin to feel new emotions, leading them to feel affection for one another and sexual relations. This is prohibited in their society and lands them in prison.

This is a cult film from the beginning of George Lucas’ career, the director who would go on to enjoy tremendous successes with films such as Star Wars and Indiana Jones.
